Knitting Project #1: Baby Scarf For My Little One

Baby Scarf For My Little One

So, as I'm knitting along, I think it would be good to document my projects. I only truly started knitting about a month ago, and this was the first piece of work that I've completed, and of course, it is for my beloved little Lucas, who was almost 17 months old by the time it was finished.

Yarn Used
  • RICO Design - rico baby classic dk
  • Colour - 025 Tuerkis
  • Material - 50% Polyacryl, 50% Polyamid
  • 50g - 165cm (Unlike the US, they don't use the Yarn Standard here in Germany, and would only state the length for the yarn, and I think this is a 3-Light in the US Yarn Standard)
  • Suggested needle size from manufacturer: 3.5mm - 4mm
  • Gauge (10x10cm) - from manufacturer: 22 stitches 28 rows
  • Gauge (10x10cm) - from me: 24 stitches 32 rows with 4mm needles
  • Amount Used - approx. 1/3 of the ball
  • Cost - 2.99 Euro

Materials
  • 4mm Needles (all of my needles at the moment are circular needles, they seem to be the most popular type in Germany, because whenever I shop, they'd recommend circular needles over separate needles)
  • 4mm Crochet Hook (for the tassels)
  • Scissors (to cut yarn when finished)
  • Yarn needles (to weave in ends)
  • Tape measure (to measure the piece obviously)

Finished Size
  • 7.5cm x 60cm

How I Did It
  1. Cast on 18 stitles
  2. Knit stockinette stitch for the entire piece until it reaches 60cm (*knit 1 row, purl 1 row, repeat until end)
  3. Bind off
  4. The scarf looked dull when I finished, so I added 5 tassels each side, each tassel with 3 yarn (about 15cm long for each yarn)

Side Note

At first, I thought I was knitting too tight so that the scarf curves to the back, but then I asked my knitting teacher and she said it's because of the pattern, so I have to bare in mind that pure stockinette stitch on a work will make it curly! (Although it does look quite cute like that, it doesn't cover as much for my little one's neck!!)

Some Thoughts

Obviously this is a very simple project with super simple techniques, but the satisfaction I get after I have finished it was so great! I was knitting with the English (throwing) method that I learnt while I was a secondary school student almost 20 years ago, slow but it was done with care! I'm so proud to put it on Lucas's neck (and I should probably take a picture of that to keep, too!) and keep him warm :)
